How Much Skincare Should You Actually Use?

By Alice Anzanello

When skincare feels luxurious, it can be tempting to use a little more.

Another pump of cleanser. A generous layer of serum. A thick sweep of moisturiser.

But when it comes to skincare, more is not necessarily better.

The right amount helps a formula spread evenly, absorb comfortably and perform as intended—without leaving the skin feeling overloaded or wasting product unnecessarily.

A considered ritual is not about using the most. It is about using enough.

Why the amount you use matters

Every skincare formula is designed with a particular texture, concentration and method of application in mind.

Using too little may make it difficult to distribute the product evenly across the intended area.

Using too much can make layering feel heavy, encourage pilling under subsequent products or simply leave excess formula sitting on the surface of the skin.

The ideal amount is the quantity that allows the product to glide comfortably across the skin without requiring repeated application.

Cleanser: enough to cleanse, not coat

With cleanser, the goal is to create enough product to comfortably move across the face and remove the impurities accumulated on the skin.

For the SETOSA Enzymatic Cleansing Mousse, begin with 1–2 pumps into damp hands.

Massage gently across the face using circular motions before rinsing thoroughly with lukewarm water.

There is no benefit in creating a dense layer of foam. What matters is even coverage and gentle contact with the skin.

Milk & toner: use enough to move effortlessly across the skin

For a fluid cleansing or toning formula, think in terms of coverage rather than thickness.

Dispense enough SETOSA Milk & Toner to move comfortably across the face, neck and décolletage without repeatedly dragging the skin.

The skin should feel refreshed and comfortable afterwards—not saturated.

Eye & lip serum: less is often more

The eye and lip contours are relatively small areas, so they require much less product than the rest of the face.

With the SETOSA Eye & Lip Contour Serum, use approximately a pearl-sized amount for the delicate eye and lip areas.

Apply with the ring finger using light pressing or tapping movements rather than rubbing.

A larger amount will not necessarily improve the result. It may simply take longer to absorb or migrate beyond the intended area.

Facial serum or elixir: a few drops can be enough

Concentrated facial serums are designed to spread in a fine, even layer.

For the SETOSA Luminous Face Elixir, apply 2–3 drops to the face, neck and décolletage.

Smooth the formula gently over the skin, then press it in with the fingertips and allow a few moments for it to settle before applying moisturiser.

Its lightweight texture is designed to deliver hydration without heaviness, so a thick layer is unnecessary.

If you are unsure where serum belongs in your routine, our guide to how to layer skincare correctly explains the ideal sequence.

Moisturiser: think about coverage, not thickness

Moisturiser should create a comfortable, even layer across the face, neck and décolletage.

Start with a modest amount of the SETOSA Anti-Aging Face Cream and add a little more only if needed to cover the intended area comfortably.

The cream should glide across the skin without excessive pulling and should settle into the complexion rather than remaining as a visibly heavy coating.

Your skin may naturally prefer slightly more moisturiser in dry weather and slightly less in warmer or more humid conditions.

Body cream: be generous where the skin needs it

Body care is different because the surface area is much larger.

With the SETOSA Body Cream, apply a generous amount to clean, dry skin and adjust the quantity depending on the area being treated.

Pay particular attention to areas prone to dryness, including the arms, legs, elbows, knees and décolletage.

Massage using slow circular movements until the cream has comfortably absorbed.

Should you use more when your skin feels dry?

Sometimes—but not always.

If your skin feels persistently dry or tight, applying a very thick layer of one product may not address the reason behind that discomfort.

Instead, consider the complete ritual.

Are you cleansing too aggressively? Is your serum providing sufficient hydration? Are you following it with a moisturising layer? Has the weather changed?

Dryness can also be influenced by the condition of the skin barrier. Our article The Skin Barrier: Why It Is the Secret to Calm, Healthy-Looking Skin explains why hydration and barrier support are so closely connected.

Why using more does not make skincare work faster

Skincare is rarely improved by impatience.

Applying twice as much serum will not necessarily produce twice the benefit, just as a thicker layer of cream does not automatically mean greater hydration.

What matters more is consistent use, appropriate application and choosing formulas that suit your skin.

This is one of the reasons a simple ritual can often feel more effective than a complicated one.

Give each layer a moment

Rather than adding extra product because the skin still feels damp or slippery, give each layer a few moments to settle.

Lightweight formulas should feel absorbed before the next step is applied.

This can make the entire ritual feel more elegant and may reduce the chance of products rolling or pilling against one another.

A simple guide to your SETOSA ritual

  • Enzymatic Cleansing Mousse: 1–2 pumps
  • Milk & Toner: enough for light, even coverage
  • Eye & Lip Contour Serum: approximately a pearl-sized amount
  • Luminous Face Elixir: 2–3 drops
  • Anti-Aging Face Cream: a modest amount, adding more only if required for even coverage
  • Body Cream: apply generously according to the area being treated

The art of using just enough

Luxury is not excess for the sake of excess.

It is precision, intention and knowing when something is already enough.

The same principle applies to skincare.

Use enough product to cover the skin comfortably. Allow each formula to perform the role it was designed for. And resist the idea that a more elaborate or more generous application must automatically deliver a better ritual.

Beautiful skincare is often quieter than that.

Measured. Consistent. Considered.
